Survival Horror Fashion Showdown
Come with us on a magical dress-up journey through the world of the shotgun-toting heroine! Can Rebecca really stop the train while wearing that halter top?!

ROUND 2: The Bad Girls

CONTENDER 1
Nega Jill Valentine
Alternate S.T.A.R.S.,
Resident Evil (2002)

Form: 9
Function: 8

The goal of creating a costume out of black leather is twofold: coolness factor and sex appeal. As the “dangerous” girl, Nega Jill possesses both qualities, which can be attributed to her emphasis on smooth, form-fitting materials, a colorful vocabulary, and smoking in the girls’ room every day in high school. And you know the bitingly witty one-liners that characters deliver at the end of each game before firing that critical rocket? Nega Jill says them all the time.

Okay, so this one didn’t make the final cut into the game. It’s still cool! Resident Evil Rebirth Character designer Kenichirou Yoshimura explains how this image came to be: “In the beginning, we just made Chris’s textures a little blacker to first design a tentative Wesker. However, “Wesker” ended up looking a lot cooler than Chris so it made me think that “special forces” people should definitely wear black. Well, I went too far by making Jill’s clothes dark as well, because it made her look “kinky.””

A valid concern, but fanboys everywhere would’ve been thrilled to have this little number available as a bonus costume. How hard would that’ve been! Jesus, Capcom, sometimes we just don’t get you.

Final Verdict: 8.5
Badass and just as effective as boring old regular Jill. If only it were selectable#@!

CONTENDER 2
Rebecca Chambers
Vision in Leather,
Resident Evil Zero (2002)

Form: 10
Function: 3

It doesn’t get much sexier than squeezing little Rebecca Chambers into a pair of black leather pants and an accompanying halter top, which for some reason can be found in a passenger’s closet on the 8:00pm to Raccoon City. So effective is Rebecca’s outfit that the field medic needs not one, but two belts (one standard leather w/silver buckle, and a second single-row pyramid studded belt sagging on one side) to keep the zombies out. Becky’s bare midriff appears care of her vermillion top, which comes with matching evening gloves and a darling pendant.

This outfit also gives us a glimpse at Rebecca’s previously unseen butterfly tattoo, located on her left arm. We’re forced to conclude that as an eighteen year old (the youngest member of the force), Rebecca either decided to go out and celebrate her recruitment by getting a totally fresh tat, or acquired it earlier in life through less legal hookups. There’s always the possibility that it’s a temporary, but come on. She’s got too much class for that.

Unfortunately, beauty comes at a cost: in this case, the chunks of skin that a zombie will make off with after an encounter with dream-date Becky. An outfit like this one is pretty much assured to be the downfall of any overconfident heroine up against the undead, but the problem is intensified by the fact that every zombie is going to want a piece. For reasons unkown, possibly workplace discrimination, there are no female zombies in Resident Evil Zero.

Final Verdict: 6
Damn, girl!! Don’t flaunt that booty too much, you’re a lover, not a fighter!!

CONTENDER 3
Heather Morris
God of Thunder,
Silent Hill 3 (2003)

Form: 8
Function: 6

As a smart-ass 17-year old, Heather would be going against tradition if she didn’t have at least one outfit to satisfy her “grunge” side. Hence the “God of Thunder” costume, a delightfully rebellious combination of dark jeans, dyed gray hair, arm-length tattoos, and t-shirt devoted to Heather’s deity of choice.

The image on the shirt seems to be in the style of ancient Japanese painting, leading us to believe that this particular God is Japanese in origin. However, Japanese mythology contains no fewer than four deities devoted to thunder, so your guess is as good as mine. The popular theory is that the shirt has been graced with a painting of the Thunder God Aji-Suki-Taka-Hi-Kone, who was said to have been carried up and down ladders as a child to calm his rage, thereby explaining the encroaching and receding sound of thunder. Heather seems to have more than a few freaky trips up and down rusty ladders herself, so it’s not too far of a stretch.

Okay, so it’s pretty stylish! But does it perform?! Well, not really. There’s nothing special about this costume (or most of her others) to give her that extra defensive kick in battle. But she does sort of blend in with the dark and depressing scenery of the Otherside, so we’ll give her the points. Interestingly enough, the code required for this costume at the password input selection screen is “GangsterGirl,” an occupation that Heather readily assumes regardless of attire thanks to her willingness to, as they say, bust mad capz.

Final Verdict: 6.5

THE WINNER: Rebecca Chambers

Huh?! Didn’t Nega Jill score highest? Well, yes, but she’s disqualified from this round for two reasons: 1) Her costume is not available for players to enjoy within the game she is representing and must therefore be thrown out as specified by the guidelines set forth in the Survival Horror Fashion Showdown official rules, and 2) Rebecca’s just so hawwwwwwt. We hope you’ll understand.
